The Music Department continually strives to raise the profile of music within the Academy and through extended curricular events. These performances and displays generate excitement, and students who participate are respected and enthused about what they are achieving. This in turn adds to good ethos of the Academy. We have an extensive extracurricular programme running throughout the week as well as over 150 students currently receiving individual instrumental lessons.
The music department is staffed by Mrs Anna Casling, Head of Department, Mr Ian Underhill, Teacher of Music, Mrs Mjasiri, Music Technician and Recording Engineer and 9 peripatetic instrumental teachers. We currently offer individual tuition on the following instruments: Piano, Guitar (Electric, Bass and Classical), Drums, Violin, Cello, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Baritone Horn, Trombone, Tuba and Voice (male and female).
The yearly cycle of performances and events include: A performance at Southwark Cathedral, Christmas Concert for KS3, Carol Service for KS1/2, Community Civic Carol Service, Bexley Schools Showcase, Young Voices at the 02, KS3/4 production at Easter, Eisteddfod, Deputation Day, Founders Day, Bexley’s Summer event, Year 6 production in the summer term and many more! We organise and arrange visits and trips for our students to allow them to experience as much live music/performances as possible. This includes the Primary Proms, theatre trips and local concerts.
Musical activities both in and out of the classroom encourage students to work together in various combinations, transcending age, gender and race, developing positive relationships without bullying or discriminating. We encourage social cohesion between students across the Academy and prepare them for the future.
The music curriculum has been designed to allow all our students to explore as many different musical styles as possible within KS3. In KS4 we follow the EdExcel GCSE syllabus. We learn through practical and listening activities, as well as giving the students they opportunity to compose their own music. Our class sets of African Drums, Acoustic guitars, steel pans and samba kits to name but a few, allow our students to engage with many different styles and genres.
Our bespoke ICT suite within the department uses software such as Logic, Sibelius, Auralia and Garage band to allow students to create their own music. Our fully equipped recording studio means we are able to record students performances to a professional standard giving them memories that will last a lifetime. The music department consists of 5 individual practise rooms, a recital room and 2 teaching classrooms, offering our students the best facilities in which to encourage their love of music.
The music specialism reaches out to develop links which see Crayford Academy students broadening their vision, raising their aspirations and taking significant steps towards securing their futures in the ever changing and challenging world. Offering its facilities and presenting opportunities with a desire to build lasting and positive relationships with all groups and individuals that make up the local and broader communities.
