Drama GCSE Summer HW for Y11
Dear Y11 Drama students,
In September we will study a play called THE ACCRINGTON PALS by Peter Whelan (1981).
It is about the run up to World War One in the North of England in the Lancashire town of Accrington and how it changed the roles of women and men in Edwardian society.
One of the protagonists is a Socialist and one of them is a Methodist. You should find out what these two words mean and what kind of things did these people believe in.
The protagonists are eventually involved in The Battle of The Somme on 1st July 1916. You should do some research here and find out why this battle is so famous in military history. What were The Pals Regiments?
You can watch You Tube clips of the battle or watch documentaries on it. There is a lot of information out there.
Also listen to the Lancashire accent and have a go at re-creating it for the characters you will create in September. There are accent clips online for you to listen to.
The practical work and the 1000 word controlled assessment make up 30% of your final grade, so it is worth getting a head start now.
Thanks for all you hard work in Year 10 and have a great and safe summer.
Mr S. Lucas
