Drama is a crucial way of developing a student’s communication skills, confidence and self-esteem. At Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy we supply a wide range of opportunities for students to find their voice in front of an audience.
In class, students explore a variety of genres and performance styles. They work collaboratively as part of groups and independently in order to produce performance pieces to be shown to the class. As a result of peer and student feedback, they are encouraged to continuously evaluate and improve their work, gaining further confidence along the way.
Students are constantly encouraged to be innovative and expressive in their performance responses, allowing them to develop performance skills that help give voice to their creative instincts.
Outside the classroom, students are given opportunities to explore more focused performance projects. Key Stage 3 Drama Club’s priority is to work towards mini performances in front of larger audiences. On a larger scale, the whole school play and Eisteddfod performance are excellent chances to showcase a student’s skills in front of a full auditorium, whilst working side by side with students from across the school.
Students who choose Drama as an option undertake the GCSE offered by AQA. This involves students further developing their performance skills in a number of directed and independent assessed performance projects.
In addition to this, they will explore a variety of theatrical styles and approaches, as well as their application throughout the history of theatre. This is assessed as part of a written exam, allowing students to not only showcase their practical abilities but also their understanding of the theory of the subject.
